Rooted in Care: Protecting Our Communities Against Measles

At The Raven Collective, we believe in the deep responsibility we share to protect one another — our children, our elders, and our communities. Right now, that responsibility feels more urgent than ever.

Across the United States, measles cases are rising again. Measles is not just a harmless childhood illness — it can lead to serious health complications, lifelong disability, and even death. The good news? We have the tools to prevent it. Vaccines remain one of the most powerful ways we can keep ourselves and our relatives safe, strong, and thriving.

When we choose to vaccinate, we are doing more than protecting ourselves — we are standing in solidarity with those who cannot get vaccinated: newborns, those with certain health conditions, and our most vulnerable relatives. Immunization is an act of love and community care, much like a herd of buffalo surrounding and shielding the youngest among them from danger, or prairie dogs sounding the alarm to protect their town.

These teachings from the natural world remind us that our strength is rooted in looking out for one another.

When enough of us are vaccinated, we create a “herd immunity” — a circle of protection that keeps disease from taking hold and spreading. By getting vaccinated against measles, we are keeping our circle strong. We are ensuring our children can grow up healthy, that our communities can gather safely, and that we honor the gift of life we share.

You’ll see some of the images we created in this campaign below. They draw from lessons of buffalo, deer, prairie dogs, and squirrels — all offering a powerful reminder: protecting the young, the vulnerable, and the future takes all of us.
